As technology has advanced, gaming has become more accessible. Gone are the days of sitting a foot from the TV, clutching a wired controller. Now, video games can be played from a cell phone with a group of 15, and no gaming experience is required. Now, there are so many family-friendly co-op games like the Lego games, and for gamers that want to share a hobby with the whole family this holiday season, there are plenty of options to try.

Jackbox Party Pack
Developer Jackbox Games specializes in social games that are played using one screen and several smartphones. These games are inspired by classics like trivia or charades, and can be purchased in Party Packs that include five games, or as individuals. Players only need a web-enabled device to participate, and only one player needs to own the game or Party Pack. The newest release, Jackbox Party Pack 8 includes five games and can be played remotely or in close proximity. Plus, every Jackbox game includes an explanation for new players, ensuring that the rules are clear and everyone is on the same page. If grandma can write a text, she’ll probably be able to play a Jackbox game.
Among Us
Among Us took all of 2020 by storm, so many families and friend groups might have already tried it out last year. As another game that only requires a smartphone and free app download, it’s an easy and free way to play a game long-distance or otherwise. Since last year, Among Us has had several large updates, allowing more players in a game, more customization, and new roles to play as. While it is more of a traditional video game than something like Jackbox, the game’s premise is a simple version of a hidden-role game, and gameplay can include interaction out of game with the group in order to vote out the impostor. For the non-game savvy family, a round of Among Us with few tasks and only one impostor would be easy to teach and get the hang of.
Just Dance 2022
The newest release in the Just Dance franchise is available on the Switch, Xbox, and Playstation and features 40 new songs and dances. This rhythm dancing game is pretty straightforward: players do what the dancers on the screen do. Up to four players can dance with controllers in hand, but players who don’t mind not recording their scores can still participate empty-handed. Featuring music by Dua Lipa, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, and more, Just Dance 2022 has something for everyone, especially since the dances come in a variety of difficulties. The real draw of Just Dance 2022 is that you really don’t have to be able to dance in order to win.
Richie’s Plank Experience
For groups that have access to a VR headset like an Oculus Quest or Rift, Richie’s Plank Experience is guaranteed to have everyone in stitches. The game doesn’t require any real action on the player’s part besides walking forward. And with several different game modes ranging from slightly stressful to fully terrifying, whoever is unlucky enough to play will show their true colors when they react to some very common phobias.
Video games aren’t just for gamers anymore. This holiday season, anyone with access to a smartphone, PC, or console can game with the whole family. Once grandpa gets rowdy in a game of Quiplash, there’s no turning back — it will be a Christmas tradition forever.
